Report an IT Security Incident
When in doubt, report it!
The guidance below will help you know what to do in a few different scenarios, but if you're ever unsure if an incident should be reported to the IT Security Office (ITSO), go ahead and report it here.
Self-report a phishing scam
If you receive an email that you suspect is a phish:
- Do not reply.
- Do not click on any links or open any attachments.
- Self-report the phish through your email service (i.e., Outlook).
Report a compromised account
Unauthorized password, credential, account changes:
- Call 4Help at 540-231-4357
- Reset/change your password.

Report a malware incident
- Report any suspected or confirmed malware incident to the IT Security Office (ITSO).
- If it involves high-risk data or disruption to critical systems, call 4Help immediately at 540-231-4357.

Report a data exposure
- Report any potential or confirmed data exposure incidents to the ITSO.
- If it involves high-risk data, call 4Help at 540-231-4357.

Report any crime or emergency to the Virginia Tech Police Department
- Call 911 for any threat to life or property or other emergency.
- Report all crimes and suspicious activity/persons anywhere on campus immediately to the VT Police at 540-382-4343, or by dialing 911.
